The Evolution of Roebuck Farm: A Journey Rooted in Bio-Intensive Gardening

Roebuck Farm, nestled in Taranaki, New Zealand, has a fascinating story of development, deeply influenced by the principles of Bio-Intensive gardening. This method, which combines the French Intensive method with bio-dynamics, was pioneered by Alan Chadwick and popularized by John Jeavons, author of “How to Grow More Vegetables.”

The Origins of Bio-Intensive Gardening

John Jeavons, originally a systems analyst, trained with Alan Chadwick, one of the early pioneers accredited with merging the French Intensive method with bio-dynamics to create the Bio-Intensive gardening method. This approach emphasizes deep living soils and intensive planting on permanent beds. The modern small-scale market garden, with roots dating back to early 1800s Paris, owes much to this innovative method. Elliot Coleman of Four Season Farm in Maine extensively researched this period of food production, further solidifying its historical significance.

Jeavons’ outreach through his non-profit, Ecology Action, based in Willits, CA, has been instrumental in promoting food independence in developing countries, utilizing minimal outside inputs.

Jodi’s journey of establishing Roebuck Farm

In 2003, after completing a two-year apprenticeship in vegetable production at the Koanga Institute, Jodi spent a season working with Jeavons in California. This experience proved transformative, igniting a passion for sustainable farming and Bio-Intensive gardening. In 2004, Jodi + Tanya purchased an empty paddock in Taranaki, New Zealand, marking the beginning of Roebuck Farm.

The Early Years: Building Soil and Infrastructure

The initial years at Roebuck Farm were challenging yet rewarding. With no topsoil or infrastructure, the focus was on building soil structure and quality. For the first 12 years, summer vegetable seed production and winter cover cropping were the primary activities. This approach helped to enrich the soil, setting a strong foundation for future farming endeavors.

Embracing Bio-Intensive Principles

At Roebuck Farm, the principles outlined in John Jeavons’ classic book were meticulously followed. On-farm composting, seed raising mix, propagation, and seed production were all integral parts of the farming process. The Bio-Intensive method, which allows for a significant amount of food to be grown in a small area with hand tools, proved to be both efficient and sustainable.
