Roebuck Farm revisits market gardens in Quebec
This week, we highlight some incredible examples of market garden production in Québec, where small-scale, profitable farming continues to thrive, innovate, and inspire. In this region for the inaugural CANOPY leadership program, I had the opportunity to revisit some old favourite farms and also new ones.
During the trip, I visited multiple inspiring farms: La Grelinette Espace Old Mill Ferme des Quatre-Temps Ferme Les Carrotes Le Jardin de Funambules
One of the most influential in this movement is La Grelinette, run by Maude-Hélène Desroches in Frelighsburg. Over the past two decades, they have revolutionized local food systems, providing a model for small-scale, high-efficiency farming that has been adopted globally. La Grelinette’s success lies in its commitment to sustainable practices, making local food production not only environmentally friendly but also economically viable. Their work has paved the way for a new generation of farmers focused on quality, community, and ecological integrity. Farm-to-Plate Innovation
In addition to their work at La Grelinette, JM has recently launched a new venture just down the road from their home farm. This farm-to-plate model is designed to deepen the connection between growers and consumers. It serves as a hub for agricultural innovation, with integrated office spaces for growers, facilitating collaboration and knowledge-sharing. This new space is also home to the Heirloom, the Market Gardener Institute and Growers & Co which focuses on training and empowering small-scale farmers through educational outreach and hands-on experience. By streamlining communication and teamwork, they’re making it easier for small farms to succeed and for consumers to access high-quality, locally-grown produce.
JM’s new book written with Catherine Sylvestre ‘The Winter Market Gardener’ focuses on techniques for growing through the colder months, offering practical insights for those interested in extending their growing season. This is a critical resource for farmers in northern climates who want to increase their resilience and profitability.
A special thanks to all the growers who hosted me during this visit. Your work is not only feeding your communities but also contributing to the global conversation on how to create a more just and sustainable food system.
